Faculty Highlight: Jeff Herring

Jeff Herring

Meet Jeff Herring, an MPA adjunct faculty member who specializes in human resources management. The MPA program asked Jeff a few questions about his experience:

Who is your current employer and what is your job title?

The University of Utah, Chief Human Resources Officer

What are some of the duties of your job? Recent achievements?

Managing and leading the University's HR functions such as recruiting, talent management, employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, etc. The University was recently ranked as the number 32 best large employer to work for in the United States by Forbes.

What are some of your past careers, and how has being involved with the MPA program helped you in your career?

I have been an employment and labor law attorney and have been the Executive  Director of the Department of Human Resources at the State of Utah.  Being part of the MPA program at the University of Utah helped prepare me for my career at the U by exposing me to some of the complex public policy issues associated with higher education and tools to help analyze them.

How has being an MPA instructor helped you in your career?

Being an instructor for the MPA Program has helped me stay connected to the broader public administration issues that are ever changing.  The students and cohorts are always challenging me to continue my understanding and leadership of the policy issues I am responsible for.

What advice would you give to incoming or current MPA students?

The positions and careers you have in world of public administration will be so much more personally rewarding if you can truly find passion in serving others. I think this is the essence of effectively being a public servant.
